My New Yogurt Maker
Microbiome Miracle—Curing Ailments Associated with SIBO
I bought the Ultimate Health Yogurt Maker after reading Super Gut by Dr. William Davis1. You may recall his other well-known book, Wheat Belly. In Super Gut2, Dr. Davis explains that many, perhaps most, health issues are potentially caused by SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), which he suggests is largely ignored by the medical system, which instead prescribes endless pharmaceutical products.

I have only just started using the machine and will learn more as I continue. I made mistakes with my first two batches but have now worked out the kinks. I asked many questions of the machine (if you know me, you know what I mean) to figure out how to make this work for me.
I started with Lactobacillus reuteri. Dr. Davis recommends using specific strains, as not all strains yield the same results. I chose the Osfortis brand, containing strain ATCC PTA 6475. Benefits I can expect include:
Increased empathy
Increased libido
Deeper sleep
Restoration of youthful muscle and strength
Appetite reduction
Improved immune response
Reduced stress effects
Healthier skin
Better mood
Boost in oxytocin (the hormone of love and empathy)
Additionally, selecting the right strain may promote bacteriocins, which act like natural antibiotics. Unlike conventional antibiotics, bacteriocins target only problematic microbes without disrupting the entire microbiome, making them effective against SIBO.
A 2017 study demonstrated that Lactobacillus reuteri was effective against Clostridium difficile. However, my interpretation of the study is that, officially, the system would recommend obtaining preparations from suppliers, thus allowing them to inflate the price. What I appreciate about Dr. William Davis is his focus on budget-friendly methods for making our own medicines with a yogurt maker. He even explains how you can do this using an oven if buying a yogurt maker isn’t feasible. Usually, you only need to purchase the supplement once because, after making the first batch, it can be used as a starter culture for subsequent batches. See the screenshot below and the link to the 2017 study in the footnotes.4
